Translation?
1:4 “In her [the Word] was life, and the life was the light of men (collective: mankind or humanity?).
1:5 The light in/into the darkness, and the darkness did not receive it.
p.s. I am a beginning French student, who is using for spiritual as well as practical purposes. I am trying to learn French to pass a translation exam next fall.
Based on the theology of the whole book, “men” might a reference to humanity (see John 3:16, John prefers to use the term “world” here, a possible reference to humanity).
hope that helps
